Thanks for your reply. In my opinion it should be a runtime decision instead
of compile time. How hard it is to compile the module can be discussed, but
downloading, extracting and then reading manuals to find the right options
and compiling is harder than apt-get install module. The FAQ also notes that
successful compilation depends on specific compilers increasing the
complexity.
Therefore I think it should be a runtime decision. Right now I am trying to
get all the dependencies right, looking for a 'xml2-config'. A bit annoying
when the binary from the package otherwise seems to work and do exactly what
I need.

you are wrong, it compiles in 20-25 seconds (including ./configure run)
